"Nice" doesn't seem enough of a world for the beautiful boardwalk that runs along the pebbled sea shore in Nice, France. My husband and I were lucky enough to have spent time there back in February. I can't believe it's winter in these pictures as you'd never know for the teal water and beige/pastel palette.
The boardwalk that runs along the oceanside is so fun and gorgeous, in fact, that we never ventured into the city at all! Seems like an opportunity missed but for us we wanted to enjoy the sun and water as much as possible. As you walk along the beach, you are passed by bicyclists and pedestrians all dressed in the classic french style (even the tourists!) you'd imagine. Scarves, floppy hats, lovely dainty sweaters...it was a bit magical.
The woman pictured above was probably over 80 years old, and the climate surrounding here wasn't warmer than 60 degrees...yet there she was, going for a swim with her retro swim cap and darling suit. I decided I wanted to be her when I grew up.
We rented bicycles and rode along the boardwalk all day, stopping at cafes for coffee and pastry along the way. I was struck at how content everyone in Nice was (how could you not be). Parents let their children wonder a bit, un-afraid of the outcome. Older folks strolled lightly smoking cigarette and chatting with equally relaxed restaurant staff. It reminded me of a grand movie from the golden age of Hollywood, and I was grateful to a part of it...if only for a day.
